Favorite Light Yagami moment
…well shit, this is a stupidly difficult question. I’ve narrowed it down to two moments: the moment where Light tells Ryuk, “僕は新世界の神となる” (I’ll become God of the New World!) and when Light is there smirking down at L dying in his arms.
The reason for the second one is pretty self-explanatory I feel. That is Light’s highest point in the series, and yeah, I’ll admit it, I love it when guys like Light, who we are not supposed to root for, end up winning. He’s just so high and smug at that moment! If you’ll excuse the pun, it’s when he shines the brightest.
The reason why I love the first moment is probably pretty obvious too because that’s the exact instant where everything crystallizes into this beautiful, undeniable truth that Light is kind of crazy. And it’s also in the first chapter. It made me go, “I AM GOING TO SEE THIS ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO THE END BECAUSE I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO THIS KID.” Light is just such a fascinating character with such an incredible complex mind.
But what makes it so, so, so much more interesting is the fact that despite how delusional and insane Light sounds in that instant, many years later, he IS undeniably a god in his own right. The world really is run by Light. Whatever mask Light happens to be wearing at the time, as either Kira or L is law. I love the way he manages to turn delusion into reality over the course of many years. It nails in the fact that like so many other things, it’s all a matter of perception. Light himself says it later, when he says “Good or evil, it all depends on the results.” Truer words have never been said.
To add in a layer of sadness though, Light ultimately gains worshippers who pray, not out of fear, or follow him like mob idiots, but because Kira has made a profound difference in their lives, and he is not there to witness the actualization of his goal.
